Christopher Kane Just Released a Line of Extremely Quirky Rugs

Image
Scottish designer Christopher Kane is known for taking inspiration from a pretty oddball set of sources: he’s designed collection based on everything from The Joy of Sex to hoarders . Now, Kane is lending his fervent creativity to a new arena: homewares. The Rug Company , a high-end carpet brand, just announced a collaboration with Kane that draws significant influence from Kane’s previous collections. For example, the botanical flower drawing that graces rugs and the lone throw pillow in the collection was once stamped onto sweatshirts and silk separates in his Spring 2014 collection . In addition to the floral motif, there’s an extremely #cloglife graphic grid design rug, and a more subtle floral filigree rug. This delightfully quirky collection is perfect for the nesting fashion enthusiast or super-stylish homebody. Honeymoon Like Royalty At These Canadian Hotels

Image
Few of us will tie the knot in a castle ceremony attended by Oprah and televised worldwide, however, when it comes to honeymooning, the royal treatment is a little more accessible. Canada has long been favourite getaway destination for royals ( Toronto, in particular, played a major role in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s courtship) and there are plenty of luxurious accommodations across the country fit for monarchs on the move. From Calgary to Nova Scotia, we’ve tracked down some of the most beautiful hotels in Canada that have played host to members of the royal family over the years. With palatial suites, exquisite food and five-star service, these properties are particularly ideal for romantic staycations and honeymoons close to home. The Westin Nova Scotian With a stunning waterfront location, The Westin Nova Scotian has been a fixture in downtown Halifax since opening its doors in 1930. The heritage property’s executive crown suite</a> has played host to Queen Eliza...

Banana Clips and Love’s Baby Soft: One Writer Remembers The 80’s Beauty Of Her Childhood Dance Recitals

As a four-year-old, I tap danced on toy boxes and picnic tables—any sturdy surface that would hold me—while my parents’ record player spun Barry Manilow. I was always putting on performances for anyone who would watch—usually captive audiences like my then-newborn sister and our neighbour’s dog Kiwi. So it wasn’t surprising to anyone that when my mom signed me up for dance classes, I was all in. Every June, as other children were counting down the days until summer vacation, I counted down the days until our annual dance recital. In the beginning, this was because I couldn’t wait to be onstage—a showgirl, just like Lola in the song “Copacabana.” Later, it became about the beauty rituals around it and because for that one day, I could be part of that world of cool girls who were old enough to wear makeup and have solo or duet routines: the girls who smelled like Love’s Baby Soft and watermelon lip balm, wore bike shorts and Body Glove zip-front bikini tops to jazz class and whose fr...

De Beers Has Announced It Will Start Selling Lab Diamonds

Image
De Beers has made a branding 180 by announcing the launch of the upcoming man-made jewellery line, Lightbox . The De Beers name, long associated with exclusivity and dominance in the diamond market, is going against the grain, presumably to combat the rise of lab-made stones. “Lab grown are not special, they’re not real, they’re not unique. You can make exactly the same one again and again,” said Bruce Cleaver, chief executive of  De   Beers in an interview with  Bloomberg . The new offering will target a younger customer-base that may be hesitant to splurge on higher-ticker items. The brand will also be selling at a significantly lower price-point than it’s lab-made competitors. Regularly, a man-made one carat diamond usually runs for about $4,000 USD, while De Beers is planning on selling theirs for $800 USD.  Photography via Instagram/@debeersofficial  Another way De Beers is differing from the synthetic diamond market? They will not be grading the dia...

What Happened After Roseanne Posted That Tweet?

Yesterday, the reboot of Roseanne’s self-titled sitcom got cancelled after she tweeted a racist remark about the former aide to President Barack Obama Valerie Jarrett. Valerie Jarrett is an African American woman, who was born in Iran, which we mention because it’s relevant to this). It has been less than 24-hours and a lot has happened. Since we’re in the age of an overwhelming amount of information, I’m here to answer all your (hypothetical) questions to make sure that we’re all on the same page. So, I might not have Twitter. What did Roseanne tweet? Great question. Although Roseanne has since deleted the tweet, the Internet is forever. The tweet in question read: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Roseanne tried to pass the tweet off as a joke, but calling a woman an ape did not read well to the rest of the world. Are you saying that Twitter reacted poorly? Twitter certainly reacted, but it depends on what you define as “poorly.” The Twitterverse b...

Serena Williams Launches Debut Fashion Clothing Line

Image
After previously designing collections with HSN and Nike, Serena Williams is stepping out into the fashion spotlight on her own. The winner of 23 Grand Slam Titles and mom to adorable Alexis Olympia Ohanian can now add clothing “designer” to her already long list of accomplishments. The first drop of her debut collection, ‘Serena’, launches today exclusively  online  and it’s the first time she’s been able to show the full extent of her creativity with no limitations. Photo courtesy of WWD In an interview with WWD , Williams explained, “I’ve done things for HSN but I’ve always been limited with the customer and fabric selections. They gave me so much knowledge though and so much practice and so much training.” Even before collaborating with HSN and Nike, fashion was something she always wanted to pursue which is why she completed a two year fashion and design program at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 2001. Combining her past studies with the knowledge she g...

Inside the Canadian Oasis Where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle May Honeymoon

Image
By now, any royal-watcher is well aware that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are fans of breaking the mold when it comes to royal protocol. Their wedding alone saw the first time that a royal bride walked herself (partly) down the aisle, the groom received a wedding band, and the cake wasn’t a traditional fruit cake. (I’m no mind reader, but I’m sure  many  of the guests were delighted to see that particular tradition being broken). So when it came to the guessing of where the newlyweds would honeymoon, we were all ready for some wildly modern take on royal getaways. However, the couple has allegedly chosen a place for their honeymoon, and it looks like the couple has chosen to follow in the foot steps of royals before them. According to   TMZ a source has said that the couple has chosen to stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta. They are rumoured to be staying in the Outlook Cabin, which is fittingly nicknamed the “Royal Retreat.” The 6,000 square foo...

Even Issa Rae Has Had Hella Credit Card Troubles

Image
The irony in helping to launch a new brand strategy for American Express is not lost on actress/writer/producer/model and powerhouse Issa Rae . “AMEX is one of the first credit cards that I maxed out,” says Rae with her signature laugh. We’re talking at the Live Life Experience pop-up art space at 336 Queen Street West—open until June 9—surrounded by paintings and large scale installations by local contemporary artists working in Canada. The vibe is certainly more graffiti than gallery with neon sign designs like “You Rock,” by birdO (a.k.a. Jerry Rugg), or mural-inspired large scale works by “Troublesome Troy.” Amex unveiled the space to help spread the brand’s new (what else?) millennial-friendly messaging. Remember the “Don’t Leave Home Without It” slogan from days past? Now it’s “Don’t do business without it” and “Don’t live life without it.” This is a refresh for one brand that, while hardly losing business, is looking to move with the times and reach them younger “hybrid” ...

The Best Fashion Hotels From Around the World

Image
If you like a fashion brand, you probably want to live like that brand. This goes a long way to explaining why luxe fashion houses are venturing beyond fabric seams and diving into brand extensions that range from haute cuisine to high-end hotels. It’s just another way for fashion creatives to redefine and expand what modern luxury is like. Designer hotels are located all over the world, from Hotel Lungarno by Ferragamo  in Italy to Hôtel Petit Moulin by Christian Lacroix  in Paris. With glossy marble floors, avant garde decors and Instagram worthy accents, it’s everything you would expect in a hotel dreamed up by the best fashion designers. Here’s a glimpse at hotels that offer the same escapist vibe you get from slipping into an awesome pair of shoes.
